In celebration of the 50th anniversary since the establishment of bilateral relations between Guyana and Cuba, the Cuban Embassy in collaboration with the Global Friendships Foundation will be hosting a ‘Fiesta Cubana’ on September 24-25, 2022 in Georgetown.
‘It is often said that the best way to understand a country is to experience its culture’, a press release from the organisers stated. To this end the main focus of ‘Fiesta Cubana’ will be the display of Cuban culture in its various forms, including its dance, food, cocktails, tourism, music, art and handicraft. ‘Fiesta Cubana’ is not only intended for the local Guyanese community but also for Latin American and Caribbean communities living in or visiting Guyana in the latter part of September. The release emphasized that the event intends to promote Cuba to Guyanese travelers as the latest and greatest tourism destination for special occasions such as weddings, study tours, vacations, honeymoons, group travel, adventure travel, business travel and family travel.
During September’s event, Guyanese will be exposed to traditional Cuban dishes such as the Cuban sandwich, Medianoche, Ropa Vieja, Lechon Asado, Ajiaco Cubano, Fricase de pollo, Pulpeta along with famous Cuban cocktails including the classic Mojito, Daiquiri, Cuba Libre, El Presidente, El Floridita, Canchanchara and Cubanito all intended to give attendees a taste of Cuba’s rich culture which is largely an amalgamation of African and Spanish influences.
Cuban musical genres, from Mambo to Tango to Salsa to Bolero, are all known globally for their lively and pulsating rhythms, and Guyanese will be exposed to these fine art forms as well as opportunities to participate in Cuban dances. The organizers are also hoping to add a Latin flavour to the Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL’s) T20 Finals and Carnival as both ‘Fiesta Cubana’ and CPL T20 Final dates coincide.
