Road rage incident in which cyclist was injured `amicably settled’

The road rage incident in which national cyclist Christopher Hochan was injured on October 8th on Sheriff Street has been amicably settled and there will be no charges.

This is according to  police spokesman Stan Gouveia.

Hochan was injured after a car deliberately swerved into him following an exchange of words between him and the driver. The driver of PAE 9179 had made contact with Hochan multiple times before deliberately pushing him off the road during their confrontation.  Hochan managed to maintain some balance by unclipping from his pedal, preventing more serious injury.

“Within Mandela Avenue to Sheriff Street. He came into contact with me about two times, the last part of that is when he braced me onto the side of the road and we had some exchange of words. He was cursing at me, I was asking him why you’re in my lane?! However, he deliberately swerve on to the left to push me off to the road at that time I lost balance of my bike”, Hochan had told Stabroek News.

“If you know anything about cycle and how the cycle shoes are designed, it’s designed to slip into the pedals. So what happened there is I had to clip out of my pedal and try to gain some sort of balance from his car”, he said.

After reporting the incident to the authorities, Hochan expressed his disappointment with the response, highlighting the lack of adequate attention given to the safety concerns of  cyclists. He also noted that the driver callously left the scene without checking on his condition or taking responsibility for the damage caused.
