Twenty small businesses were celebrated for their excellence across various sectors, while 12 entrepreneurs were awarded $1 million each under the Green Tech Fund Grant initiative at the annual Small Business Awards Ceremony, held on Friday evening at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, who delivered the keynote address, highlighted the critical contributions of small businesses to Guyana’s economy. Describing them as the “backbone of the nation,” she reaffirmed government’s commitment to fostering growth, innovation, and sustainability in the small business sector.

Reflecting on the success of GuyExpo 2024, which featured over 300 exhibitors, including clients of the Small Business Bureau (SBB), the Minister commended local entrepreneurs for their creativity, innovation, and improved standards. “The noticeable improvements in packaging, branding, and the sheer ingenuity on display, were a testament to the dedication of our small business owners.”

The Green Tech Fund Grants were a focal point of the evening, underscoring the government’s vision of promoting sustainability and green innovation. “These grants represent more than just financial support; they reflect the potential of your innovative ideas to contribute to a greener Guyana,”  Walrond remarked, expressing optimism about the transformative impact these projects could have on the nation.

Walrond also highlighted key government initiatives supporting the sector, including the Business Incubators in Lethem, Region Nine, and Belvedere, Region Six, which have empowered agro-processors to transform raw agricultural products into export-ready goods. Over the past four years, the SBB has disbursed more than $1 billion in grants to over 4,000 businesses and facilitated nearly $1 billion in loans through partnerships with financial institutions.

“These initiatives are not handouts but strategic investments in Guyana’s future, helping startups gain traction, boosting confidence in our economy, and creating employment opportunities,” the Minister explained.

Additionally, she pointed to the government’s expanded Financial Literacy Training for small businesses, announced by President Irfaan Ali at GuyExpo 2024. This initiative aims to equip entrepreneurs with the skills to manage resources, make informed decisions, and maintain regulatory compliance, ultimately enabling them to access government procurement opportunities.

Among the awardees were Ameer Rahim and Budwatty Ramnarine, recognised in the Sustainable Agriculture category; Janet Patterson, who received the Creative Craftsmanship Award; and Lisa Birkett, honoured in the Tranquil Glow Small Business category.
