Forty-two-year-old Elroy Mentor appeared on Friday before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of narcotics.

Mentor pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on January 15 at Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, he was in possession of 71.6 grammes of cannabis.

Magistrate McGusty asked Mentor how he found himself in this situation and he responded that while on his way to work, he, along with another man, were searched by the police on Croal Street. He added that the police found the drugs on a desk nearby. Mentor stated that he was sent to the Ruimveldt Police Station and has not seen the other person who was searched alongside him since then. He also told the court that he resides at Lot 29 Middle Street, McDoom.

The prosecutor objected to bail citing that Mentor provided a different address to the one he gave to the police. Further, Mentor admitted to owning the narcotics, and that the cannabis was found inside his right pants pocket and not on a desk as he claimed.

Mentor interjected at this point saying that he did not give the police any other address, but Magistrate McGusty stated that she had no reason to question the prosecutor’s version of events. As such, bail was refused and Mentor was remanded to custody.

The matter was adjourned to February 7.
