Tropical 7s Rugby

Five Guyanese players, the most for any nation on the entire roster, were selected as part of the West Indies 7s programme to compete at the Tropical 7s Championship from April 18th-19th in Tampa, Florida, USA.

The five selected are Lionel Holder, Godfrey Broomes, Tyrese Prescod, Owen Adonis, and Vallon Adams.

The Tropical 7s, which will be held in Tampa, Florida, from April 18th to 19th, is one of the world’s premier rugby events. It features elite teams in the categories of Senior, U-23, U-18, U-16, U-14, and U-12 (coed) in both men’s and women’s divisions.

Meanwhile, President of the GRFU Ryan Dey said, “We just received some fantastic news, five of our players have been selected for the West Indies rugby team, including the four mentioned on our Facebook page, along with Vallon Adams.”

According to Dey, “Making a West Indies squad is a huge achievement for any rugby player in the Caribbean. Considering that there are over a thousand players across the RAN teams (excluding the USA and Canada), being selected is a testament to an athlete’s skill and dedication.”

“Notably, Guyana has the highest number of players on the team compared to any other country.

This proves that our athletes are still competing at a high level. However, the next step is translating this success into national progress and reclaiming our position at the top of 7s rugby in the region”, the further said.
