(Trinidad Express) FIFA, the global governing body of football, has selected Trinidad and Tobago as a case study for safeguarding best practices. This was revealed by Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president Kieron Edwards yesterday.
From a sporting perspective, safeguarding refers to the process of protecting the health, well-being, and human rights of individuals, particularly children in sport, ensuring they are safe from harm and abuse.
While safeguarding remains a relatively new focus among FIFA’s 211 member associations, Edwards suggested that TTFA’s methods could influence future FIFA policies.
“We have been selected by FIFA to be a case study in best practices for safeguarding worldwide,” Edwards stated at a Safeguarding presentation ceremony at the TTFA Technical Department in Couva. “This is a moment of pride for the TTFA and for Trinidad and Tobago as a whole.”
Edwards made the announcement as the TTFA simultaneously expanded its Safeguarding Department, marking it the first of several departmental upgrades planned in the coming months.
“We recognised a major flaw within the TTFA’s functionality—many heads of departments existed, but without actual departments,” Edwards explained. “Now, with 21 individuals joining the Safeguarding Department, it speaks volumes about the direction in which the TTFA is heading.”
Since Edwards’ administration took office in April 2024, Gary St Rose, the TTFA’s Safeguarding, Player Care, and Well-being Manager, has been managing the department alone. However, with the expansion, he now has additional support. As part of the expansion, Tobago Football Association president Everton Alfred has been appointed Deputy Safeguarding, Player Care, and Well-being Manager/Chief Compliance Officer. Additionally, Raquel Russell and Lystra Lara will form part of the executive unit, supported by several zonal officers.
Edwards praised St Rose’s efforts, acknowledging his dedication to the safeguarding initiative.
“Gary St. Rose must be commended for the work he has done,” Edwards said, repeatedly recognizing his contributions.
St Rose has been at the forefront of safeguarding matters, particularly regarding recent inquiries involving Next Level Consulting Limited (NLCL) and National Under-20 coach Shawn Cooper.
“We would have seen over the last couple months, the interest, in terms of issues, happening with Safeguarding,” Edwards said.
