The Commonwealth Youth Games will be hosted next year in Trinidad and Tobago and several countries within the Region will be “putting their hands up” in support of the Twin Island Republic.
So said Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Katie Sadlier in an interview with Stabroek News yesterday here in Birmingham, England.
Prior to last night’s closing ceremony of the XX11 edition of the Games, the final media press conference was held in the morning at the Games Media Hub and this daily was able to speak with Sadlier.
Sadlier told this newspaper that the CGF is excited about the spinoff effects for Trinbago2023 and the Region for hosting the event next year.
“The Commonwealth members are really excited about going to Trinidad for the Youth Games and I know the Minister (Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe) has talked about the benefits that it is going to bring to Trinidad and the Caribbean Region.”
Sadlier added, “One of the special things about the Commonwealth Games movement is that it is a family that supports each other and several of the countries within the Caribbean Region will be putting their hands up to support Trinidad if there is a need.”
CGF President Dame Louise Martin DBE said “We are absolutely delighted that Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.
Sadlier then reaffirmed the CGF’s support for the success of Trinbago2023, “Both Dame Louise and I are heading to Trinidad in a couple of weeks to sit down and take a look at the venues being looked at for the sports and re agree on the sports programme.
A commendable fourth place finish in the final of the men’s 4x100m relay yesterday brought the curtain down on Team Guyana’s participation at the Commonwealth Games here in Birmingham, England.
On the last day of competition at the overflowing Alexander Stadium, the Akeem Stewart, Emanuel Archibald, Arinze Chance and Noelex Holder quartet narrowly missed the podium after clocking 40.05s in the blue riband event.
England (38.35s), Trinidad and Tobago (38.70s) and Nigeria (38.81s) were the podium dwellers in that order.
