National chess champion to be crowned today

The third round of the qualifier for the 2019 National Chess Championship has been completed and Taffin Khan and Davion Mars are the two leaders of the competition.

Taffin Khan, who represented Guyana at 2018 Chess Olympiad, begins today’s National Qualifier Chess Tournament as a favourite to win.

The qualifier for the National Chess Championship begins today starting at 10.00 am at the Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, opposite the Government Technical Institute.

This poster announces details surrounding the 2019 National Chess Qualifier for entry into the National Chess Championship. The qualifier begins next Sunday, April 7, at the Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue, opposite the Government Technical Institute. Registration for the qualifier commences at 9 am. Two games will be played on Sunday with a time factor of 90 minutes per player per game with an additional 30-second increment from the first move. The qualifier is an open tournament, meaning any person, including juniors, can participate.

Jagnandan wins local title as junior chess continues to rise

Andre Jagnandan, 19, a University of Guyana law student, was crowned the 2019 Junior Chess Champion of Guyana last Sunday.

Teenager Nellisha Johnson, a member of Guyana’s 2018 team to the Chess Olympiad, which was held in Batumi, Georgia, is participating in this year’s qualifier for the National Junior Chess Championship. The qualifier will select seven persons along with the previous national junior champion to compete for the 2019 National Junior Championship. Johnson lost her first game of the qualifier to Chelsea Juma, a capable player among the women.

National junior championship qualifier starts next week

The qualifier for the National Junior Chess Championship begins next Sunday, February 24, at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue (opposite the Government Technical Institute).

Chess off to a roaring start

Chess got off to a roaring beginning this year as two successive tournaments were held in late January and early February.

Davion Mars wins year’s first chess tournament

University of Guyana student Davion Mars won the Saturday, January 26 edition of the rapid-blitz chess tournament which was held under the auspices of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF).

The story of 2019 chess in Guyana began modestly yesterday with a one-day, semi-rapid tournament.

Nepomniachtchi took early lead in Tata Steel Masters group

After six rounds of the elite Masters Group of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Holland, Russian chess grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi was in the lead.

The current women’s world chess champion Ju Wenjun. The Candidates Tournament scheduled for May in Kazan, Russia, will identify a player to contest the 2019 World Championship Match against Wenjun at a venue and date to be announced in due course. New women’s world chess championship to follow candidates’ format

Arkady Dvorkovich, the recently appointed president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), has instituted a new format for the Women’s World Chess Championship.
