Government to explore amendment to law to facilitate wedding tourism

Guyana is seeking to position itself to take advantage of the potentially lucrative wedding tourism niche in the regional visitor arrival market currently being enjoyed by other countries in the Caribbean though the initiative will require amendments to the country’s existing Marriage Act to reduce the length of time which visitors are required to be in Guyana before they can tie nuptials here.

Chief Cooperatives Officer to probe developments in GDF Credit Union

Chief Cooperatives and Community Development Officer Kareem Abdul Jabar has told Stabroek Business that he intends to proceed with an exercise aimed at regularizing the operations of the Guyana Defence Force Credit Union following a letter sent to him by registered members expressing concern over the functioning of the credit union.

General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Lincoln Lewis, has told Stabroek Business that both the government and the labour movement need to pay particular attention to matters relating to safety and health and workers’ rights against the backdrop of the anticipated major overseas investments in the mining sector.

It took its own time coming but the operations of the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc (BCGI) in which the Russian Aluminium giant RUSAL is the majority shareholder will finally come under close scrutiny in an arbitration exercise ordered by the Ministry of Labour.

LUCAS STOCK INDEX LSI  The LSI rose 0.10 percent in the second week of trading in March 2012.  The slight gain was achieved on account of a strong showing by the stock of Demerara Tobacco Company (DTC) which rose 9.49 percent, and with aid from Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) which rose 0.94 percent.  The stock of Sterling Products Limited (SPL) remained unchanged.  The gain was lowered by the stock of Demerara Bank Limited (DBL) which fell 7.14 percent.   As a result, the index returned to positive territory this week.
