Fear for this fair land

The early afternoon of Monday January 14, 1991 started like any routine assignment for us covering Parliament but by the end of the dramatic day, we would witness historic scenes of acerbic anger, unprecedented disorder and ugly uproar. 

AFC: hijacked

Seething with unaddressed grievances, the AFC’s support for President David Granger’s unilateral appointment of the chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission being the final straw, the Canada chapter of that party has temporarily withdrawn its support from it ‘unless and until’ all its grievances are properly addressed.

Lalloo Tekchand: `I think the President’s decision is very much unfair to the Guyanese people and it’s very much unconstitutional in the sense that the opposition leader presented on three occasions 18 names and the law is saying that you’re supposed to choose one of the 18 and he went out on one of the darkest nights in Guyana, Diwali night, to make this announcement, an old man who is 84 years, James Patterson, to be the GECOM Chairman.
