WPA calls on gov’t to start national reconciliation

The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) on Saturday called on the government to initiate an “ethnic and national reconciliation” process, while warning that tensions between the country’s two major ethnic groups poses a danger to national stability.

Ali voices support for reparations

President Irfaan Ali on Saturday voiced his support for reparations. “Guyana will continue to support the efforts being made within the Caribbean Community to press for the convening of an international summit to demand reparative justice for the victims of the transatlantic slave trade, African enslavement, and its enduring effects,” Ali proclaimed in his Emancipation Day message.

Local gov’t chair defends unilateral appointment of city Town Clerk

-law says three-member quorum needed for binding decision Chairman of the Local Government Commission (LGC) Julius Faerber is maintaining that he had the authority to unilaterally appoint junior staff member Candace Nelson to act as Town Clerk of Georgetown, although the law stipulates that any action taken by fewer than three members of the constitutional body is not binding.
