GDF NCOs granted bail over cannabis seizure

Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgins, and Sergeant Colvis Sam, who previously appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Grove Magistrates’ court where they remanded for trafficking in 154 pounds of cannabis, were both granted bail on Monday by Magistrate Dylon Bess in the sum of $300,000 each, with the condition that they lodge their passports and report once a month to Diamond police station.

Signing of teachers pay deal delayed for more consultations in GTU

The expected signing of a Memorandum of Under-standing (MoU) between the Ministry of Education and the GTU on a multi-year wage package has been delayed, according to  the union’s President Mark Lyte.  The postponement follows signs of an internal rift over the government’s offer and subsequent consultations with union members regarding a proposed 10% salary increase for 2024.

Gov’t says has written US State Dep’t, FBI refuting claims by Burke

The Government of Guyana (GoG) yesterday said that it was informed that Rickford Burke, a Guyanese residing in Brooklyn, New York, lodged a formal complaint with a Department within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)  alleging that the GoG  is persecuting him among other things and it said it has also written the US State Department and the FBI refuting the claims against it.

Bartica business owners/employees at labour rights seminar

Several business owners in Bartica, Region Seven are now better informed on protecting their rights as employers as well as the rights of their respective employees, following the hosting of a seminar on Guyana’s Labour Laws, a press release from the Ministry of Labour says.  The seminar, which was held yesterday at the Bartica Town Council, provided in-depth information on various labour laws, including those governing overtime payments, termination of employment, severance pay and occupational safety and health requirements, inspection and record-keeping, the national minimum wage, probation periods, and leave with pay.

Three charged with `waiting to commit felony’

Marlon Garett, a 25-year-old labourer of Lot 3 Hadfield Street, Lodge, Georgetown; Jamal Anthony, a 28-year-old labourer of Guyhoc Park Squatting Area, George-town; and Owen Boston, a 23-year-old labourer of Lot 1286 Block ‘E’ Cummings Park, Sophia, Georgetown were all arrested on 2024-08-08 by ranks from Providence Police Station and charged yesterday with the offence of  waiting for an opportunity to commit a felony.
