Schenectady police reforms announced as review of Guyanese man’s arrest underway

After a video of a Schenectady police officer kneeling on the head of a Guyanese man went viral, a review is currently underway while policing reforms, including a ban on the use of a knee to a person’s head or neck as a control hold, have been announced. 

GECOM meeting postponed to tomorrow

A proposed meeting today of GECOM on the way forward following yesterday’s Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) decision has been postponed to tomorrow as government-appointed commissioners have requested time to study the ruling.

CCJ sets aside Court of Appeal ruling

In a unanimous decision giving itself jurisdiction, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) yesterday set aside the ruling of the Guyana Court of Appeal on valid votes and paved the way for GECOM to finally declare a result for the March 2nd general elections using the figures from the recount.

Yesterday’s Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling has been welcomed by Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali and all of the small parties which contested the March 2 General and Regional Elections, and after four months of waiting they hope it will pave the way for a swift declaration and swearing in of Ali.

GECOM chair invites commissioners to meeting

Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission have been invited by Chairperson (ret’d) Justice Claudette Singh to a meeting today at 1:30pm to discuss the way forward pertaining to a declaration of results from the March 2nd elections, following yesterday’s Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling.

Western diplomats again urge gov’t to abide by recount results

Envoys from the US, UK, Canada and the European Union (EU)  yesterday met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Karen Cummings to reiterate that their missions expects the Government of Guyana to uphold the then pending ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice and that the recount results must be used.
