UG gets Geotechnical Computer Lab

With the advent of the oil and gas sector in Guyana, the University of Guyana (UG) is now equipped with a Geotechnical computer lab which will serve hundreds of students, according to the Department of Public Information (DPI).

CARICOM blisters EU on revised blacklisting of members

CARICOM has hammered the European Union (EU) over a revised tax governance blacklist that includes Caribbean countries, accusing it of infringing upon their sovereign rights The March 12 revised list of countries purportedly not adhering to tax good governance includes five members of CARICOM: Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Dominica and Trinidad & Tobago.

Jagdeo asks CCJ to restore validity of no-confidence vote

Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo has applied to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to appeal the Guyana Court of Appeal’s decision by majority to invalidate December’s no-confidence vote against government, while saying that the meaning of a majority of the 65 elected members of the National Assembly was misconstrued by the judges.

Commonwealth team to meet GECOM

In a further sign of the growing international interest in the political crisis over a date for general elections, a team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, which will be in Guyana for four days beginning today, is scheduled to meet with the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) tomorrow.

Nandlall requests position on no-confidence majority be “accurately reflected” in Appeal Court’s final decisions

Attorney Anil Nandlall, who represented opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo in the no-confidence motion cases before the Court of Appeal, has asked acting Chancellor Yonette Cummings-Edwards to ensure that the final decisions accurately reflect his opposition to the suggestion that the constitution implied that an “absolute majority” was needed for the success of the vote.

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has urged opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo and the PPP/C to rethink their plan to boycott sittings when the National Assembly reconvenes, while saying that both government and the opposition must work together to unite the nation and secure its patrimony for the benefit of all.

Triple drug therapy aims to eliminate Filariasis

The Ministry of Public Health, along with the Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/ WHO), will be adding a new drug to its Lymphatic Filariasis campaign and extending the campaign’s reach, with the hopes of eliminating the disease by next year.
