Teachers strike to go on until gov’t engages

By Antonio Dey and Bebi Oosman Both the President and the General Secretary of the GTU yesterday vowed that a strike that has seen strong support from teachers across the country will enter its second week tomorrow and will continue until the government convenes talks on collective bargaining.

 Qatari hotel to be sited on NIS, GNS grounds

The Qatari investor who plans to build a hotel on Carifesta Avenue which will have access to a boardwalk along the seawall from Camp Road to the Kitty roundabout and will do so on the Guyana National Service (GNS) and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) grounds.

Guyana hasn’t yet signed new EU-ACP agreement

Guyana is yet to sign on to the Samoa Agreement – the successor to the Cotonou Agreement that the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (OACPS) has with the European Union (EU) –  as it is addressing concerns  including the matter of refugees, sources say.

On Thursday, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers whilst conducting a follow-up investigation in the Cornelia Ida Housing Scheme area, conducted a search at a residence which led to the discovery of 518 brick-like parcels, wrapped in transparent plastic suspected to be cannabis and 12 brick-like parcels wrapped in transparent plastic suspected to be cocaine.

Simulator to train oil platform workers launched

As part of the first phase of the Guyana Technical Training College Inc (GTTCI) at Port Mourant, Corentyne, President Irfaan Ali yesterday commissioned a Facility Simulator to the tune of US$13m which will train workers for the offshore oil platforms.

EU adding health to Guyana aid

Through its flagship Global Gateway Initiative strategy, the European Union (EU) has added health as a main area of focus alongside forest protection, in its assistance to this country and hopes to see Guyana in the near future producing pharmaceuticals to meet its own and  regional and global needs.

Ali calls on striking teachers to be patient

In his first public comment on the five-day-old teachers strike, President Irfaan Ali yesterday called for patience as he says he has promised incremental benefits but he was silent on why his government has not entered collective bargaining with the GTU over the last three and a half years.
