Cuba’s Raul Castro crushes dissent like Fidel -report

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Cuba’s Raul Castro has kept  the system his brother Fidel used to repress critics, refusing  to free scores of people imprisoned years ago and jailing  others for “dangerousness,” Human Rights Watch said in a report  issued yesterday.

Obama vows Afghan exit; Clinton prods Karzai

KABUL, (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama  pledged yesterday to end the Afghan war before he leaves  office, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Hamid  Karzai to make a new compact with his people on the eve of his  inauguration.

Dossier ups human rights probe call -449 killings cited

Seeking to galvanise support for an international inquiry into human violations here, the joint opposition political parties yesterday unveiled a dossier documenting abuses, including the torture and murder of citizens that they say were carried out with state support.

Fidelity now importing flour

Fidelity Investments, which is now importing flour, has accused the National Milling Company of “crying foul” over the new product on the market saying yesterday that its import is legally purchased from Suriname and has been approved for sale by local authorities.

Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday ordered that a 23-year-old taxi driver be remanded to prison when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court for allegedly being found with a quantity of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
