Descendants of enslaved Africans seek land rights in the Amazon

BELÉM, Brazil, (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – As leaders of Amazon nations met in Brazil for a summit on protecting the rainforest, descendants of African slaves who escaped into the forest centuries ago are seeking land rights in an echo of the struggle by Indigenous peoples.

Thousands of protesters march in Haiti against gang violence

PORT-AU-PRINCE,  (Reuters) – Tensions escalated in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince yesterday  as thousands of protesters took to the streets to speak out against the country’s devastating gang violence, which resulted last week in the death of a police officer.

Trinidad PM denies being in breach of Integrity Commission Act

(Trinidad Express) Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said yesterday he was not in breach of the Integrity in Public Life Act since he did declare the purchase of his townhouse at Shirvan Development in Tobago to the Integrity Commission.

SAO PAULO/BRASILIA,  (Reuters) – Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon fell in July to its lowest level for the month since 2017, preliminary government figures showed yesterday, boosting President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s stature on environmental policy ahead of a summit of rainforest nations.
