Haiti conflict drives thousands toward famine

PORT-AU-PRINCE,  (Reuters) – A gang-fueled social and political crisis in Haiti has swollen the ranks of those suffering severe hunger in recent months, with an estimated 5.4 million Haitians having run out of food and gone a day or more without eating.

Depth of major Amazon tributary in Brazil drops to record low in severe drought

MANACAPURU, Brazil,  (Reuters) – The Solimoes, one of the two largest tributaries of the Amazon River in Brazil, fell to its lowest level ever yesterday in the worst drought on record in the Amazon region, leaving villages on its banks stranded without food, water and transport.
