The British would like to indulge themselves with the thought that the death of Queen Elizabeth marked the end of an era in their portion of the planet, but in the UK as well as in the rest of the world the real fin de siècle came on February 24th this year, with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

In an interview with Stabroek News last Monday, President Irfaan Ali defended the controversial $566.9m contract award to Kares Engineering Inc for the rebuilding of the North Ruimveldt Secondary School and evinced exasperation at the concerns that had been raised about the process.

Release the RSS Report

On Friday, September 9th,  the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement on the conclusion of the government’s engagement of the Regional Security System (RSS) to evaluate/review corruption allegations that had been made on August 11 by Detective Sergeant Dion Bascom about the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) handling of the probe into the murder of Ricardo Fagundes on  March 21 last year.

Youth unemployment

In a report published last month, which assesses global employment trends for youth for 2022, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) divulged that unemployment in this group, estimated at 15.6 percent, was three times higher than the adult rate in 2021.

NPTAB response

On Friday, the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) responded to an editorial that appeared in Tuesday’s edition of Stabroek News which had raised questions about the award to Kares Engineering Inc of the contract for the construction of the North Ruimveldt Secondary School.
