Letters to the Editor

Government should monitor the price of fertilizers

Dear Editor, According to Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud (KN, 31.5.08), the government has sounded a clear warning to the importers and distributors of fertilizers that it will not tolerate hoarding and unrealistic pricing, as the farmers have complained bitterly.

We should support the police

Dear Editor, With reference to your editorial of 26.5.08, ‘Middleton Street,’  I would like to ask if you were an unarmed policeman and you came under rapid gunfire would you pursue that criminal without backup?

Disregard for traffic laws

Dear Editor, During my visit to Guyana in May 2008, blatant disregard for the traffic laws was common, such as not stopping at pedestrian crossings, overtaking on bridges, and so on. The

Sewage overflow in New Market Street

Dear Editor, Over the past three months, every day the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) underground sewerage system in New Market Street (between Main and Carmichael Streets) has been overflowing leaving raw sewage floating in the gutters.

The Office of the President should have stopped after disassociating itself from the statement by the Home Affairs Minister

Dear Editor, Rather than perpetuate the issue by seeking to obdurately justify the executive’s right to criticize the judiciary, it would have been better if the Office of the President had let its disassociation from the Home Affairs Minister’s criticism of the recent decision by the acting Chief Justice to grant bail to a double homicide accused awaiting trial for eight years, be the end of the matter.

‘Assertions not addressed’

Dear Editor, On May 27, Mr Rickey Singh made a vitriolic attack on me in the Stabroek News, in response to my letter criticizing the editor-in-chief/publisher, Mr David de Caires, and his newspaper for pursuing an anti-black agenda.

Pollsters were not named

Dear Editor, Mr Vishnu Bisram in his usual sit-on-the-fence style in a letter captioned ‘Polls show Republicans have a good chance of holding on to the White House’ (SN, 1.6.08) states, “according to an average of the latest polls, about 60% of Americans prefer the Democrats to control the House and the Senate…” Without naming who conducted the polls, Bisram gives the impression as though his ‘polling’ entity was part of that process.

Less cheap talk, more sincerity in parliament

Dear Editor, When the sacred inner urge and ability to think deeply and extract from the inexhaustible  treasures of divine wisdom are reflected in the utterances and posturings of parliamentarians in the National Assembly, then and only then, should their images and speeches be transmitted.

Grateful for mediation training

Dear Editor, I wish to thank and congratulate the USAID Guyana Democratic Consolidation and Conflict Resolution (GDCCR) for the training I received in basic mediation.

The Minister of Home Affairs spoke out of turn

Dear Editor, I write to commend the Guyana Bar Association on its rebuke of the President and the Minister of Home Affairs regarding their responses to Justice Chang’s grant of bail to a murder accused whom the state had incarcerated for eight years, without trial.
