Letters to the Editor

Discriminatory Hemp Bill offers great possibilities for Guyana

Dear Editor, The passing of the Hemp Bill, though discriminatory in nature, offers a new crop with great possibilities for Guyana… The bill is discriminatory in the sense that Clause 23 of the Bill, “gives the Minister the power to designate geographical areas, by Order subject to the negative resolution of the National Assembly, to cultivate or manufacture industrial hemp and hemp-related products.”

A display of desperation which further erodes whatever little credibility the Crime Chief may have had

Dear Editor, During the Police ‘press conference’ which was called to ‘debunk’ the explosive allegations made by detective Sergeant Dion Bascom that there is a cover-up by senior ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the investigation into the murder of Ricardo Fagundes aka “Paper Shorts”, the Crime Chief, Assistant Commissioner Wendell Blanhum in an effort to discredit Bascom stated that contrary to Bascom’s claim, Rondell Bacchus, one of the earlier suspects in the murder, was taken to CID HQ by his lawyer.

Gov’t controlled media are all failing to realise and internalise the ‘real issues’ of the day

Dear Editor, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, MP, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs declared that “MY attention was drawn to an invitation to the public, by an organisation describing itself as ‘’The Cuffy 250 Committee,’’ to a forum to be held on Sunday August 21 (that has now been prematurely postponed or cancelled), 2022, via many social media platforms.”

Mercury does not degrade

Dear Editor, I read with consternation in the Sunday SN that the EPA officers were reported as excusing their unpreparedness to test for mercury at Chinese Landing by stating that they would have to carry the samples to a lab within a certain time.

How to get our athletes to win gold on the world stage

Dear Editor, I have had the opportunity to watch live on TV and several YouTube replays of the recent World Athletics held in Eugene, Oregon, USA as well as the Commonwealth and European Games held in Edinburgh and Munich respectively and have been frankly amazed at the showing of some of the so called lesser nations and less known athletes at the various disciplines.

Ogunseye has failed to come to terms with the big picture

Dear Editor, As I was busying myself getting down to my responsibility as a newly appointed commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), my attention was drawn to Tacuma Ogunseye’s letter to the editor in the August 19, 2022 edition of S/N; ‘Rohee’s message is crystal clear.’
