The GTU strike ultimatum: It is the government that must ‘shift gears’

The first thing that should be said about last week’s notification of strike action by state-employed teachers, through their union, the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) is that the extent of the notice given by the Union allows sufficient time for a compromise to be arrived at, thereby sparing us the headache of having to see a new academic year begin with children unable to take their places in classrooms and in a situation where it becomes anyone’s guess as to when normalcy will be restored.

Dear Editor, A letter entitled ‘Total fabrication’ in the Stabroek News of 10th August 2018 piqued my interest, it was a release by the Guyana Police Force’s Public Relations and Press Officer (PRO/PO), Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan refuting a report by online news organization Citizen’s Report with regards to claims of verbal abuse of a constable by Minister Annette Ferguson.

The time is now for the GTU to act

Dear Editor, Ms. Coretta McDonald, the General Secretary of the Guyana Teacher’s Union in November 2015 updated the nation to the fact that the agreement arrived at with the PPP/C Government would be coming to an end in December 2015 and there was a need for a new agreement with the PNCR-led Granger Government.
