Venezuela’s refusal to participate at the ICJ

The Foreign Ministry could hardly have been surprised when on Monday, June 18, Venezuela made it known that it did not intend to participate in proceedings brought by Guyana in the International Court of Justice with regard to Caracas’s claim that the 1899 settlement of the border between the two countries was null and void.

Who is responsible for the upkeep of the cemeteries?

Dear Editor, Reading Freddie Kissoon’s column today (Kaieteur News, 23/6/18) on the inaccessibility and deplorable condition of the Le Repentir Cemetery, especially during heavy rainfall, one gets the impression that it is the central government that is responsible for the maintenance of the cemetery in Georgetown and therefore, by extension, all the cemeteries in municipal and rural Guyana.

Dear Editor, It would appear from the report on pages 18/19 of SN of Friday, June 15, that a case for/against selection of one candidate for the position of Deputy Chief Election Officer is based largely on prior related experience in GECOM, first as its Public Relations Officer and later Deputy Chief Election Officer, arguably on the basis of a ‘consensus’ (other informed observers would substitute the word ‘conciliation’) at the time and which required no casting vote.
