The President and Parliament

Nobody familiar with how events have unfolded in Guyana in recent times would have been altogether surprised by the raucous heckling from the placard-bearing ranks of the PPP/C in Parliament on Thursday.

David’s call for young people to participate in civil discourse is even more relevant today

Dear Editor, This week as we observe the 9th anniversary of the passing of the founder of Stabroek News, David de Caires and after reading the contemplation of Doreen de Caires on what action he would have advocated today if he was still with us, I reflected on my own experience with David and remembered him telling me as a 24-year-old University of Guyana student, after I had congratulated him on the brilliantly written Stabroek News’ editorials, that he could not take full credit for all the editorials since there was a team of contributing writers  and that I as a young person should get involved in the public discourse and contribute my own views and thoughts on the topical issues of the day.

Persistence in error

In a concluding note to a series of lectures on “The Uses and Abuses of History,” the historian Margaret MacMillan observes that while we ought to refrain from pat assertions about what history “teaches” us or “shows”, it is nevertheless useful “to be reminded, as a citizen, that those in positions of authority do not always know better.”
