I am not superstitious but this week’s media reports of the sudden ‘inexplicable crash’ of the foundation being built at Palmyra to accommodate the replica of the ship which brought the first set of our forefathers from India to the Highbury sugar plantation is portentous of ‘cosmic justice’ against those who are bent on desecrating the sacred memory which Highbury represents.

I deeply admire the spirit of the people of Guyana, a nation that has led the Caribbean on many social policy and protection issues, including ones related to sexuality.
For the year 2016, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) again failed to meet pivotal benchmarks including those pertaining to overall systems losses and the number of blackouts and their duration.

The recent arrests and detention of a former Executive President of Guyana; Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary; Attorney General; other Ministers; and Senior Member of the PPP/C; for the purported purpose of exacting justice for the Guyanese people; seems to me to be loathsome and persecuting acts.

I learnt of the death of Lall Munilall as a result of a phone call in the evening earlier this week from Avinash Bhagwandin, a text message from Bish Panday, and from a letter by Mr Christopher Persaud which was published in the April 27th issue of the Stabroek News.
Venezuela is at a dangerous political juncture. One possibility is that President Nicolás Maduro could finally retreat from what is an untenable position, and allow the return of genuine democracy.
