Public controversies over the availability of foreign currency in Guyana’s financial system, although infrequent, tend to be unhelpful to market participants and the public in general, since shortages hint at a depreciation of our local currency which, if protracted, generally leads to higher prices for imported goods.

During the last elections campaign, one would recall President David Granger was a strong advocate of strengthening and improving the country’s education system, or in other words, his emphasis was more so on the quality of education.
Between them, it took the coalition administration and the Private Sector Commission (PSC) a little over a day to confirm what had long been apparent, that is, that the relationship between the private sector and the government, post the 2015 general elections, has never really come to be characterized by any real warmth.

At the end of last year I had pointed out that the Hotelling rule for optimal extraction of a non-renewable resource would suggest that oil companies, had they owned or controlled a resource such as the Liza and Payara wells, would in fact choose not to produce if they expected the net price (ie, its price less extraction costs) of oil to rise in the future, and in particular to rise faster than the interest rate.

Guyanese and Trinidadians have reported that Federal Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) Agents of Homeland Security raided restaurants, stores and other job sites on Liberty Avenue in Richmond Hill (dubbed Little Guyana) a few days ago picking up undocumented immigrants.

While the Guyana government is processing applications for the appointment of a Chancellor and Chief Justice, the Caribbean Court of Justice has commented on impartiality and the importance of judicial appointments, and stressed that there must be independence of the judiciary.

A letter from the Police Public Relations and Press Officer in SN’s issue of February 27 prompted me to visit the Suddie Police Station where it was verified that the telephone numbers for senior ranks in the Region 2 district were on a bulletin board; however, these were not at all clearly visible as was claimed.

Is the government aware that online shopping, promoting and facilitating online shopping are providing a rapid conduit for the suctioning of foreign currency out of the country?
At various junctures of the life of this 21-month-old government it has been emphasised in the editorial columns of this newspaper that the government must fastidiously ensure fairness in the hiring of persons for all positions given the concerns over the jobs-for-the-boys syndrome and the favouring of persons on grounds other than merit.
