Protecting children in the care of the state

It is not so much the fact that the official report into last month’s fire at the Hadfield street Drop-In Centre was due to be handed to government yesterday as just what the report and its recommendations will mean for the quality of care that children in the custody of the state can expect, going forward, that is relevant at this time.

Deputy Registrar of Deeds cannot take up her appointment

Dear Editor, Article 199 (1) and (3) of the Constitution provides as follows:  “Art 199 (1) the power to make appointments to offices to which this Article applies and to remove and exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in such offices shall vest in the Judicial Service Commission… “Art 199 (3) this article applies to the office of Commissioner of Title, Magistrate, Director of Public Prosecution, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Registrar of the High Court, Deputy Registrar of the High Court, Registrar of Deeds, Deputy Registrar of Deeds…” On the 4th day of May, 2014, the Judicial Service Commission appointed Ms Zanna Frank, attorney-at-law, to the position of Deputy Registrar of Deeds in accordance with Article 199 of the Constitution.

Suicide prevention should not be politicised

Dear Editor, The Caribbean Voice is deeply saddened by the fact that political posturing trumped the need to save lives as “a parliamentary motion expressing concern for Guyana’s alarming suicide rate, quickly descended into a politicised debate marked by blame-throwing” (as one local media outlet described it).

The IAC will not be intimidated

Dear Editor, The Indian Action Committee (IAC) has noted the response by Lincoln  Lewis (SN and GC,  August 13) to the organisation’s  letter to the  editor regarding President Granger’s statement and the proposed establishment of the communal Lands Commission which is supposed “to rectify the anomalies and resolve the controversies which, up to now, surround thousands of hectares of communal lands which were purchased  in the Post- Emancipation village movement.

Walter Roth Museum

On Friday evening the Ministry of the Presidency issued a press release stating that the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology had been “air-marked” – not earmarked, it seems − for a major upgrade and change of location.
