Dear Editor, It is with great shock that I learnt of the death of some 17 prisoners, most on remand apparently, following riots at the Camp Street jail.

Dear Editor, The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) wishes to respond to a letter written by a ‘Concerned Citizen’ published in the March 1 edition of the Guyana Chronicle captioned ‘Janitorial services should have been advertised.’

Dear Editor, Prison overcrowding leads to increased violence, the inability to provide necessary medical care and other essential services, and degrading practices like requiring prisoners to sleep on the floor.

Dear Editor, Having myself been a part of history making events, I am well placed to state categorically that the adage, chanted by Bob Marley, that “half the story has never been told” is 100% correct.

Dear Editor, It is sad that in this modern age we have to depend on the social media for a report on the prison fire where we are learning that 17 inmates are dead and others severely injured.

“Moderation is a fatal thing,” quipped Oscar Wilde, “Nothing succeeds like excess.”

Dear Editor As one who took issue with President Granger’s initial comments on the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry Report, I feel obligated to commend the President for his most recent comments which to my mind are more in keeping with his stature and that of the office he holds.

Dear Editor, The chief executive officer of the Regional Democratic Council and his colleagues must not be looked upon as an executive arm of the ruling party, but collectively, as servants of the RDC.

Dear Editor, Most likely in celebration of our 50th Independence Anniversary there will be honours, laurels, awards, etc, that will be bestowed on many outstanding personalities and groups in recognition of their steadfast service and contribution towards the preservation and promotion of our rich and unique culture.

At the risk of being accused of facetiousness, it’s difficult to say which will be the more historic event in Cuba this month: President Barack Obama’s visit on the 21st and 22nd, the first by a sitting American president since Calvin Coolidge in 1928; or the free concert in Havana by British rock superstars The Rolling Stones, on the 25th.
