The end of cheap food

One paradox at the heart of the present world food crisis is that the same market forces which threaten to starve millions in the developing world are the ones that have led to chronic overconsumption and an obesity epidemic in the west.

The Office of the President should have stopped after disassociating itself from the statement by the Home Affairs Minister

Dear Editor, Rather than perpetuate the issue by seeking to obdurately justify the executive’s right to criticize the judiciary, it would have been better if the Office of the President had let its disassociation from the Home Affairs Minister’s criticism of the recent decision by the acting Chief Justice to grant bail to a double homicide accused awaiting trial for eight years, be the end of the matter.

Pollsters were not named

Dear Editor, Mr Vishnu Bisram in his usual sit-on-the-fence style in a letter captioned ‘Polls show Republicans have a good chance of holding on to the White House’ (SN, 1.6.08) states, “according to an average of the latest polls, about 60% of Americans prefer the Democrats to control the House and the Senate…” Without naming who conducted the polls, Bisram gives the impression as though his ‘polling’ entity was part of that process.
