Governance of Caricom

Indications in the press this week that the Heads of Government will consider the issue of the relationship between the Caricom Secretariat and the Caricom Regional Negotiating Machinery, serve to remind us that since the deliberations and decisions of the Heads at their last Conference in July last year, nothing further has been heard on implementation of measures agreed for Caricom’s reorganization, based on the Report of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Governance, Managing Mature Regionalism.

Not the time to score political points

Dear Editor As I sit in the Chambers of the National Assembly to debate the 2008 Budget I am amazed at the government trying to score political points by telling the people of Guyana that upon their visit to Bartica and Lusignan, the people were united and that this was based on them being happy and contented with the government even though they were in crisis.

Dear Editor, I’d like to thank Ms Samantha Griffith for informing us that “Article 8 B (Export tax) of the agreement signed between the Guyana Government and Barama on 14th August 1991” requires that company to pay the export commission on greenheart logs only (“The forestry commission’s critics are now criticizing it for enforcing standards”, SN February 23 2008).
