The Westminster model is holding us back

Dear Editor, The hold up in my response to Mr. Skinner’s letter captioned “African Guyanese are not engaging their energies on the right issues” (07.12.02) was the result of my desire to include in my response the central argument of my letter captioned, “Breaking into the East Indian bloc is difficult because of their greater cultural cohesion,” (07.11.27).

This was not a suitable case for bail

Dear Editor, I refer to the report headlined ‘ Carnal knowledge accused granted $200,000 bail – ordered not to go within 300 yards of VC’ (Stabroek News, Tuesday, December 4, 2007) Magistrate Geeta Chandan should not give bail at all to a 30-year-old man accused of having carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl.

Wear your bullet-proof jacket to meetings with this man

Dear Editor, I would like to recommend to members of Regional Development Councils and their counterparts in Local Government Councils that henceforth, in meetings with the individual responsible for that ministry they follow the following suggestions: (1) Always wear your bullet-proof jacket (2) Say or do nothing to cause him to get angry (3) Stay as close as possible to the quickest areas of escape just in case things don’t go right (4) Never forget that whatever he does, he will not be disciplined by the top brass or the enforcers of the law.

What if there is no agreement on a Chancellor?

Dear Editor, I read with great interest the decision of Justice Ramlal and the observations of Mr KA Juman-Yassin (07.11.20) I have a few questions on the whole issue of the Chief Justice Carl Singh acting as Chancellor:- Since his appointment as acting Chancellor was unconstitutional what effect would this have on any action/decision, administrative or otherwise he made during the period?
