Our Heads’ of State participation in public events, religious or otherwise, are in keeping with their office

Dear Editor Regarding the issue of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali attending the inauguration of the Lord Shiva Statue at the Badrinaath Ashram, Spring Garden, Region 2, and which seems a catalyst for criticisms and derogatory comments by some in society, I wish to remind that Guyana is a secular country firmly rooted in a multifaceted society encompassing culture, religion and ethnicity.

Corruption perception and reality

Not unsurprisingly, the Minister of Parliamen-tary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira has mounted a defence of her government’s record against corruption in light of this year’s Trans-parency International (TI) report which again puts the country in an unflattering light.

New context

While the government was inevitably aggravated by Transparency International’s recent Corruption Perceptions Index, it has to be observed that that report has been published in an entirely different international context from when the one last year was produced.
