Minister visits housing projects: Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal yesterday met with contractors executing projects along the East Coast of Demerara. A release from the Central Housing & Planning Authority (CHPA) said that he visited Strathspey, Bladen Hall, Vigilance and La Bonne Intention housing development. While the works of several contractors are progressing smoothly, the Minister voiced his disappointment with the pace of a number of others, the release said. Minister of Health Frank Anthony recently handed over six cryotherapy machines to regions One, Five, Six, Seven, Eight and Nine to enable treatment of cervical cancer in the regions. According to the Department of Public Information, the machines were purchased by the Ministry of Health, through its non-communicable diseases programme and the donation is part of the ministry’s efforts to eliminate and reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Guyana. “Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women in Guyana, and we believe that this is one of the cancers that if we work very hard, that we’ll be able to eliminate from Guyana,” Anthony was quoted as saying at the handing over. The Guyana Defence Force on Tuesday evening hosted a traditional “Dining out” dinner for four of its recently retired Officers.
The former Officers honoured were Colonel (Ret’d) Jawahar Persaud (second from right), Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Dwain Jervis (second from left) and Majors (Ret’d) Roderick Leitch (right) and Bhageshwar Murli (left).
The event was held at the Officers’ Mess, Base Camp Ayanganna, a release from the GDF said.

This photo shows land being cleared in the Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara in preparation for the siting of the four-lane highway. The road will stretch from the Demerara Harbour Bridge to Parika. A meeting was held with the private land owners whose farms are being disrupted. They are expected to receive compensation.

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha Essequibo Coast Praant on Sunday last hosted its Annual Phagwah Chowtaal Samelan at the Hibernia Mandir, in Region Two. Participating in this year’s Chowtaal singing were members from the Cotton Field, Airy Hall, Spring Gardens, Reliance, Affiance, Johanna Cecilia, Hibernia and Maria’s Lodge mandirs. President of the Essequibo Coast Praant, Pandit Kaydar Persaud, said that the event was organised with the COVID-19 pandemic in mind. He noted that the Chowtaal Samelan is an annual event that kick starts Phagwah celebrations in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region and usually fosters unity and togetherness. Persaud added that he was satisfied with the level of participation given the current pandemic. “We in Essequibo always look forward for Chowtaal Samelan before the burning of Holika, and we always come together and sing,” he said. Persaud also said that he has seen growing Chowtaal circles as a clear indication that a growing number of persons are interested in the artform. He, therefore, encouraged leaders to continue to practice the singing of Chowtaal, Ulara and Holi songs through the festive season. During the festival of colours, mandirs are usually involved in the singing of Chowtaal and the clashing of “Jaals”. In photo mandir members are seen taking part in the Chowtaal samelan.

Sadhguru led a delegation, which included Trinidad soca star and yogi Machel Montano, that met with President Ali and his Cabinet yesterday. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha and Sadhguru in support of the latter’s ‘Save Soil’ movement. ‘Save Soil’ is a global movement launched by Sadhguru, to address the soil crisis by bringing together people from around the world to stand up for soil health, and supporting leaders of all nations to institute national policies and actions toward increasing the organic content in cultivable Soil. Supporting partners include the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the UN Environment Programme – Faith for Earth, the World Food Programme, Partnerships For Change, and International Union for Conservation of Nature and Global Citizen Forum.
