This was the fastest team to kindle fire from bamboo and cotton at the annual August Games in the South Rupununi last week. Six villages participated comprising mainly the Wapichan. Many indigenous traditions were focused on.

As of 5.30 pm yesterday, the City Engineer’s Department was still to cover an exposed manhole at James and La Penitence streets, Albouystown, despite an undertaking by acting Chief City Engineer Kenson Boston. At Monday’s statutory meeting of the City Council, Boston had promised to place a cover over the manhole by 4 pm yesterday. When Stabroek News visited the area after the set time, the residents quickly pointed out the manhole to be photographed and said that they have been waiting months for it to be covered. Several boards were seen inside the manhole, which is located at the corner of the two streets. Councillor Heston Bostwick has been calling on the Engineer’s Department to fix the exposed manhole due to the danger it poses to citizens. He told the council, “Three children have already fallen into the manhole on James Street. A breakage of a 14-inch main at Cemetery Road, resulted in the disruption of the water supply to Central Georgetown and its environs yesterday. Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said its technicians worked throughout Thursday night to repair the main. The situation was not rectified until yesterday afternoon. GWI spokesperson Leana Bradshaw told this newspaper that because the main was over a canal next to the cemetery, the company had to create two revetment dams, using nine truckloads of dirt, and pump out the water before it could assess exactly what had to be done. Food For The Poor Guyana yesterday donated 100 beds to the Ministry of Health as part of its continuing support for the health sector. The beds were handed over at the ministry’s Brickdam, Stabroek compound, where the ministry’s Director of Primary Healthcare Services Dr. Ertenesia Hamilton said the donations have enabled the ministry to extend its services throughout the country. “This will not only be going to our coastland facilities but our hinterland facilities also will receive some of these donations,” she was quoted as saying by the Department of Public Information (DPI). A Guyana Police Force pick-up ended up in trench near the Square of the Revolution yesterday morning after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle during a chase.
