Taffin Khan: The new champion

Guyana has crowned a new teenage chess champion in Taffin Khan, 19, the youngest ever to my knowledge since the Guyana Chess Association was established in 1972.

‘Moves for Life’

Last Tuesday, the Government of South Africa made a giant stride for the popularization and development of chess in the country when it launched the Moves For Life chess programme at a gala dinner.

The two winners of the Shanghai Masters Tournament Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik. In the background are Bilbao organiser Juan Carlos Fernandez and Tian Hongwei, Vice General Secretary of the Chinese Chess Association. The final stage of the tournament will be played in Bilbao, Spain.

At the halfway point in the DDL Topco Juices Chess Tournament, Taffin Khan, Omar Shariff and Shiv Nandalall  are leading with four points each with four games to go.

Working towards a Caribbean Chess Union

The FIDE elections seem to be galloping towards a spectacular finish as we observe the two candidates for President, the incumbent Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Anatoly Karpov campaigning through the Caribbean and the world, to make an impact upon voter countries.

“Chess is a versatile model for decision-making.” – Garry Kasparov, How Life Imitates Chess The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) took a step closer towards the inevitable recognition of the ancient game in Guyana recently by staging, successfully, the FIDE-rated tournament which sought to include our players on the world stage.

A former Guyana national chess champion Raymond Singh, now residing in Canada, participated in the recent DDL Topco Juices seven round chess tournament. Raymond tied for first place with Taffin Khan. They both defeated each of their opponents and drew with each other. Raymond plays competitive chess overseas. The tie-break system handed both Raymond and Taffin the identical number of points, causing the two to share the cash prizes for first and second places. The annual Dutch Chess Champ-ionship is underway with Jan Smeets and Friso Nijboer sharing the lead after three rounds.
