Try to never yell or demonstrate aggressive behaviour in your children’s presence. Research has consistently shown that this has damaging effects on a child’s mental health.

Disciplining your child with love

We have grown up in a society where the predominant belief is that disciplining a child means “licks.”

It may be convenient to repeat the words of Mikhail Gorbachev following the G7 summit of 1991: “The ice has started moving… and the icebreaker is on its way toward renewal.”

Poems in the midst of life

A day is dulled and dimmed if it passes and I do not pick up a book of poems in my library, browse in some anthology, find a new poem in the latest issue of Poetry Review or The New Yorker or some other magazine or at least glance at some old favourite lines from Hopkins, Walcott, Yeats, Carter or a score of other supreme masters of the art and craft of making poems.

Strategies for living

It didn’t come to me like a bulb lighting up; it took a long time for the realisation to dawn but when it did come it landed with so much force that I remember it left me thinking, “Halle-lujah; I never thought of it before, but that’s true” and what I’m referring to is the fact that the most gifted calypsonians were those who had the advantage of having lived a very focused life, of having taken part in or seen or heard of unusual things, and – this is the key part – then being able to find a novel way of expressing the idea or the behaviour in a humourous or sardonic manner in a song.
