Gaico Construction etched its name in the Grand Prix series of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) through a donation of $320,000 in prizes for four tournaments. Office Manager of Gaico Champa Maraj, in handing over the cheque, said: “GAICO is a 100% Guyanese company and Managing Director Komal Singh is always in support of Guyanese activities which promote youth initiatives and harmony.” GCF Treasurer Davion Mars received the cheque and expressed his gratitude to Gaico for being the premier sponsor of the Grand Prix series. At the ceremony, Mars outlined the purpose of the four competitions.

The second Grand Prix chess competition, sponsored by Gaico Construction, began on Thursday evening and continues today with two rounds at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue.

Strangroen

Strangroen is a tiny community in Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. Its handful of families have a total of 25 members, most of whom are grown and are employed in the rice fields or at Rayaadul Rice Industries in the village.
