Shuman argues renunciation of Canadian citizenship makes him eligible candidate

Fighting a move to remove him as a candidate for the upcoming March 2nd general and regional elections on the basis of dual citizenship, Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) leader Lenox Shuman is maintaining that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) lacks both the legal authority and objectivity to decide on the issue, while contending that he officially renounced his Canadian citizenship since last December.

Granger announces squatter resettlement initiative

President David Granger last evening announced plans for a squatter resettlement body as he sought to make his case for re-election to residents of Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), where he also touted conditional cash transfers for families with school-age children from oil revenues and access to farming lands for laid off sugar workers.

PPP/C complains to GECOM about APNU+AFC calls to assemble outside polling stations

The Opposition People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) has officially complained to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) about calls by various leaders of the APNU+AFC on the campaign trail for their supporters to congregate at polling places after closing on March 2nd and “protect their ballot”  In a letter to the Chair, retired Justice Claudette Singh, the PPP/C said it was  “gravely disturbed” by APNU+AFC leaders urging their supporters to “assemble in large numbers at Polling places at the close of polls to protect their ballot.”
